2nd Philharmonic Concert / Unknown Beauties

Mendelssohn Bartholdy / Schumann / Dvořák

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's dedication of a concert overture to the beautiful mermaid Melusine was inspired by a visit to the opera. While the music hardly inspired Mendelssohn, the old legend and not least the convincing performance of the protagonist inspired him to compose his own work - and he succeeded in creating a poignant mood of intimate beauty. Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 5 is just as bright and light, revealing the young composer's mature and personal style. With its Bohemian tone, it is often referred to as Dvořák's Pastoral.
Robert Schumann's late Violin Concerto in D minor was not premiered until around 80 years after it was written. Due to its sombre sound, Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms were unable to decide on a posthumous publication of the work, but probably misjudged its spiritual depth and beauty.
The exceptional Chinese violinist Tianwa Yang will devote herself to this complex solo part in her third collaboration with the Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock. Spanish conductor Guillermo García Calvo, musical director of Madrid's Teatro de la Zarzuela since 2020, will make his debut on the podium in Rostock.
